Location: United States - Nationwide
Type: Full Time
Years of Experience:

Internal Number: Energy Modeler
As one of the nation’s most progressive design firms, Little is seeking an Energy Modeler to support our capabilities in high-performance building design. This person could be located in any of our office locations: Charlotte, NC; Charleston, SC; Durham, NC; DC (Tysons Corner); Newport Beach, CA or Orlando, FL.
This role develops and runs energy models and performance studies that inform design decisions across the project lifecycle. The Energy Modeler partners with architects, engineers, and project teams to evaluate envelope and HVAC strategies, identify opportunities for decarbonization and electrification, and communicate results in a clear, actionable way.
Our Values at Little are based on Care, Stretch and Spark:
Care passionately about your client and the people working beside you.
Stretch your imagination, your ambition and your potential.
Spark a spirit of excitement and discovery in everyone around you.
A candidate we’ll love:
You bring a strong building science foundation and a passion for improving building performance through data-driven energy analysis.
You are comfortable developing models for both early-stage option studies and detailed design-phase analysis, and you can document assumptions clearly.
You translate technical results into design recommendations that teams can act on (with clear narratives, graphics, and next steps).
You work well across disciplines and offices, are responsive to project needs, and enjoy collaborating with design and engineering partners.
You have a systems mindset and are curious about decarbonization, electrification, and regenerative outcomes.
A position you’ll love:
You’ll support project teams by building and updating energy models, running performance studies, and helping teams make informed design decisions.
You’ll evaluate envelope and HVAC strategies, operational schedules, and renewables options to quantify impacts on energy use and peak loads.
You’ll communicate findings through concise summaries and presentations for internal teams and clients.
You’ll support energy-code compliance and sustainability programs (as applicable) by providing modeling documentation and analysis outputs.
You’ll contribute to quality control by maintaining model assumptions, inputs, and files in accordance with team standards.
You’ll participate in knowledge sharing and help improve tools, templates, and workflows for energy analysis across the firm.
Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Building Science, Architecture, or related field.
3-7 years of relevant experience in building performance, energy modeling, and/or sustainable design.
Experience with energy modeling tools - ideally including IESVE, EnergyPlus/OpenStudio, eQUEST, Trace3D, Sefaira, or comparable platforms.
Working understanding of building systems, envelope performance, and HVAC strategies, and how they interact with architectural design.
Familiarity with common codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE and IECC) and performance metrics (e.g., EUI, peak loads, unmet hours).
Understanding of HVAC controls, computerized building automation, and energy management systems
Experience working with multidisciplinary design teams (architecture, engineering, interiors, planning).
Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical audiences, with strong writing and presentation skills.
Preferred License and Certifications:
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) preferred; EIT/Engineer Intern a plus.
Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or other relevant energy management credentials.
Additional relevant credentials (e.g., LEED AP, WELL AP, PHIUS, ASHRAE certifications) are a plus.
