Your Port. Your Community. Your Career.
When you join the Port of Oakland, you become part of a proud local legacy, an organization that touches virtually every resident with its services and programs. The Port of Oakland (Port) oversees the Oakland Seaport, Oakland International Airport (OAK), and nearly 20 miles of waterfront. The Port also operates as a publicly owned utility; providing electricity to the Port and its tenants at the Seaport and at OAK. The Oakland Seaport is among the top 10 busiest container ports in the U.S.; OAK is the second largest San Francisco Bay Area airport offering daily passenger and cargo flights; and the Port’s real estate includes commercial developments such as Jack London Square and hundreds of acres of public parks and conservation areas. Together, through Port operations and those of its tenants and users, the Port generates more than 84,000 jobs in the region and over 800,000 jobs across the United States. The Port was established in 1927, and as an independent department of the City of Oakland, it is exclusively controlled and managed by the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners. The Port is a dynamic organization providing good paying jobs, excellent benefits, and an exciting corporate culture.
The Port is undergoing a transformation to electrification across its business lines to achieve Zero Emissions from operations. This includes extensive and innovative work in expanding, upgrading and reimagining the Port’s electrical infrastructure systems and planning, designing and implementing leading edge solutions such as on-site generation, energy storage systems, and unique chargers for everything from buses to ocean going container ships.
The Port is currently recruiting for the position of Port Assistant Engineer (Electrical/Mechanical Work). This is professional electrical and mechanical engineering work at the intermediate action level, involving drafting and the application of professional knowledge and skills to practical mechanical and electrical engineering problems. Under general supervision, a Port Assistant Engineer (Electrical/Mechanical Work) is expected to solve problems of moderate complexity with direct assistance available on the complex or more difficult assignment. The scope of the job requires some knowledge of the division's work and of Port operations. Contacts are predominately with other public agencies.

*Acceptable EIT certification includes states which have reciprocity with California.
Licenses: Must possess a valid California Class C Driver License at the time and for the duration of appointment.
Additional Requirements: Incumbents in this classification may be assigned either to the Airport or Harbor work location.
