The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE) in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology (Russ College) at Ohio University seeks an established faculty member with a strong research record and national reputation in Biomedical Engineering (BME) for a tenured position as Associate or Full Professor.

The successful candidate will lead our effort to establish new BS and PhD degree programs to complement our current MS degree and hire and mentor additional faculty in BME. BME development within the college will be synergistic with current growth of the Heritage College of Medicine (HCOM) at Ohio University, which is the largest medical school in the state of Ohio.

While all areas of BME will be considered, candidates who work at the molecular/cellular level are encouraged and those whose research is synergistic with Ohio University’s Diabetes Institute, Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological Institute, or the soon to be formed institute focused on ageing are of particular interest.

ChBE has ~55 students in the ChE and BME thesis/dissertation-based graduate programs (including ~35 ChE PhD students), and ~140 students in the undergraduate ChE program the majority of whom participate in research and co-curricular activities. Annual ChBE departmental research expenditures are $300K–$500K per faculty member, from a balance of federal and industry sources. Research facilities are state-of-the art including the newly opened 80,000 sq. ft. Russ Research Opportunity Center. Our college benefits from the $120 million Russ endowment to the college, which supports engineering research and education, including BME. The growth of BME will leverage, and significantly augment, the current national attention the university receives from the biennial Russ Prize, akin to a Nobel Prize in bioengineering, that is awarded by the National Academy of Engineering using funds from the Russ College.

Outside of the Russ College, Ohio University has a rich environment for teaching and research in BME. HCOM, a key Russ College partner, is building a new Heritage Translational Research Center, leads the nation in National Institutes of Health funding for osteopathic colleges and has multiple clinical partners. Ohio University has a fertile environment for translational efforts including the 36,000 sq. ft. Innovation Center, and a proven track-record of success in this arena (e.g. the development of Somavert for the treatment of acromegaly; and the establishment of a successful diagnostics company.)
