Plastomics is an early-stage plant biotechnology company making more effective crops through its innovative chloroplast genetic engineering platform. We are expanding and seeking Plant Transformation Scientists to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to get in on the ground floor of an exciting start-up company with possibility for significant expansion. We are located in the 39 North Ag Biotech district of St. Louis, Missouri. Relocation assistance is available.
The successful candidates will be experts in plant tissue culture and transformation technologies, with a strong working knowledge of corn and/or soybean cell biology. You will be expected to contribute intellectually to the company’s goals. You will work primarily at the bench, closely with other cell and molecular biologists in a collaborative and cross-functional atmosphere. Successful candidates will be flexible, show good judgment, take initiative, and be willing to take on additional tasks and responsibilities as needed to achieve goals and deliverables. Excellent communication skills are essential. Opportunities exist in both production and discovery, and in both leadership and individual contributor capacities.
Develop and implement novel approaches to plastid and nuclear transformation
Collaborate closely with other cell biologists while also independently performing all duties in the laboratory required for individual projects
Contribute to project plan development and long-range goals of the plant transformation team
Clearly communicate research progress and results
Maintain detailed and organized records of project data and other materials as needed
Education and Experience:
Must have a minimum of 7 years of relevant post-graduate experience in plant tissue culture and transformation. PhD preferred but not required
Leadership positions require proven track record of success leading research teams
Proven track record of success and hands-on experience in plant transformation systems, preferably in an industrial or large academic setting
Able to perform under tight timelines and with the agility to change course as needed
Excellent planner, organizer, critical thinker, and problem solver, with a demonstrated ability to efficiently execute project tasks
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Familiarity with molecular biology, plant gene expression and transformation vector technologies a plus
Plastomics is developing a novel trait delivery technology that places beneficial traits in the chloroplast of plant cells, rather than the nucleus. Plastomics’ trait delivery platform provides solutions for many current biotech seed industry challenges: multi-trait products with complex trait integration and breeding programs, increasing pest resistance development requiring higher trait dose and new modes of action, and the inability to expand the reach of biotech traits to crops with outcrossing concerns. Providing solutions to these challenges will give seed companies a valuable tool to help growers meet the nutritional needs of a growing population.
