The Department of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in the area of Smart Technologies for Agricultural & Food Systems (Position 26626) with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2019.
The successful candidate is expected to: 1) develop an innovative, externally-funded research program in the area of smart technologies for agricultural & food systems (i.e., precision agriculture; remote sensing; big data, data analytics, informatics; robotics/automation/UAV; sensors, biosensors, biomimetics; imaging/pattern recognition/deep learning); 2) contribute to the training of graduate students and other research personnel; 3) collaborate with other academics in the department, the faculty, and the broader university community where common interests or synergies may exist; 4) teach existing undergraduate courses in the Biosystems Engineering program, and develop a new undergraduate and/or graduate course on the topic of smart technologies for agricultural & food systems; 5) participate in the department’s committee responsibilities within the University of Manitoba community; and 6) engage relevant stakeholders (both industry and government) in Manitoba and the broader community.
The successful candidate must: 1) hold undergraduate and doctoral degrees in an engineering discipline; 2) be registered or eligible for registration as a member of Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba; 3) have demonstrated research experience involving smart technologies for agricultural & food systems; and 4) possess excellent communication and leadership skills. Teaching experience in a university environment is desirable, especially prior experience in the delivery of precision agriculture or capstone courses in a Canadian engineering program.

The Department of Biosystems Engineering resides in the Faculty of Agricultural & Food Sciences, but delivers an engineering program that is accredited and administered through the Faculty of Engineering. Thus, there are strong connections and responsibilities to both faculties. There are currently 13 tenured professors, 3 full-time instructors, and 6.5 support staff (2.5 administrative & 4 technical). Undergraduate enrolment in the Biosystems Engineering program is approximately 150 students, with an additional 50-60 graduate students in Master’s or PhD programs. The undergraduate teaching responsibilities of the department include courses for the accredited B.Sc. in Biosystems Engineering and service courses for the degree and diploma programs in Agricultural & Food Sciences.
