Full Time - Experienced
The STELLA (System to Estimate Latitude and Longitude Astronomically) is a Windows-based software application developed by the U.S. Naval Observatory (USNO) and used by the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard for celestial navigation at sea. This work will provide support for algorithm development, scientific programming, testing and technical documentation activities for the development of an updated version of STELLA. The STELLA software will be updated to use recent advances in astrometry, including new solar system ephemerides. Also, the computational code must be upgraded to use common USNO software libraries and external file formats. This task is a companion to one, also being performed by CPI, for the update of the STELLA GUI. The successful candidate for this task will work closely with CPI staff working on the GUI, as well as with civil service astronomers. Potentially applicable background experience, in addition to the necessary software skills, might include spacecraft orbit and attitude analysis, astro-metry, celestial navigation, or geolocation. The position is located at the USNO in Washington, D.C. and is currently open.
Advanced degree (or equivalent experience) in engineering, astronomy, physical science, or related field
Knowledge of and experience working with standards of positional astronomy (e.g., time scales, reference frames, astrometric models, solar system ephemerides)
Experience with C programming development and/or maintenance
Experience with Microsoft Visual Studio, version-tracking systems (such as Subversion), and issue-tracking systems (such as Test Track).
