VDOT’s Structure and Bridge Division is seeking an individual to serve as the Statewide Tunnel Asset Management Engineer. This position will act as the single point of contact for coordinating all statewide tunnel-related functions (design, inspection and analysis). This includes developing and implementing strategic near-term and long-term plans for VDOT’s tunnel structures. The strategic plans will prioritize maintenance activities within funding constraints while incorporating risk assessment and life cycle analysis. Other duties include, but are not limited to: coordinating with other disciplines, professionals, and clients, including VDOT’s district offices and Divisions to address all tunnel needs; tracking and ensuring compliance with state and federal laws and regulations; working with VDOT’s Asset Management and Infrastructure Development Divisions to develop funding strategies, which may include alternative and non-traditional funding sources; preparing feasibility studies, cost and schedule estimates; consultant procurement, and reviewing governing documents such as technical specifications.
Professional Engineer’s License. Considerable experience relating to the design, construction, maintenance, and/or management of tunnels or other complex structures. Experience in asset management of highway structures, particularly of complex facilities or structures. Knowledge of tunnel and shaft support systems/techniques. Knowledge of ventilation, mechanical and electrical systems. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work with minimal supervision. Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills in complex and changing environments.
Bachelor’s Degree in mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, geological or geotechnical engineering from an accredited university; or related education/training/experience may substitute for degree. Master’s Degree or PhD in mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, geological or geotechnical engineering is preferred. Experience with the delivery or management of construction/maintenance projects involving highway structures.
